The best GPS setup for a small landscaping company is the least detailed tracking mode that solves a defined work problem. Use event waypoints if the office only needs to verify arrival, departure, or a completed visit. Use periodic on-clock breadcrumbs when dispatch needs route history. Use a tracker in a company vehicle when speed, fuel, theft, or driving behavior is the real question.
Do not buy continuous crew visibility merely because a dashboard offers it. More location points create more review work, more sensitive history, and more ways to draw a false conclusion from an inaccurate point.

If route constraints, not worker location, are the problem, use the landscaping route-planning software comparison instead. GPS history describes what happened. It does not prove the proposed route respected access windows, equipment, skills, or customer promises.
What is the difference between a waypoint, a breadcrumb, and live tracking?
These terms are often mixed together on pricing pages. Define the data before comparing products.

A truck parked at a commercial property does not prove the assigned scope was completed. A phone point across the street does not prove time theft. GPS evidence should be joined to the schedule, work record, time entry, photos or notes where appropriate, and the crew member’s explanation.
Lawn & Landscape’s 2024 trade report shows why the choice starts with purpose. Companies interviewed used app tracking for arrival estimates and labor visibility, while vehicle plug-ins supplied driving behavior and theft or liability evidence. One operator said managers reviewed exceptions rather than watching every movement. Those are different workflows and should not be collapsed into one “accountability” requirement.
How does Jobber limit what the office sees?
Jobber’s current location-timer documentation makes a useful distinction between device permission and owner-visible data.
On Grow, a user can enable automatic timers or reminders around a scheduled property. The app needs background location permission. Jobber defines the geofence as 200 meters (656 feet) and says an exit update can take up to three minutes. An active internet connection is required for automatic geofence detection.
Jobber also says location timers are not an employee-tracking service and do not share the user’s live location with teammates or the owner. Instead, GPS waypoints are logged when a user performs listed actions, including clocking in or out, starting or stopping a visit timer, adding a note or attachment, completing a visit or assessment, and completing a task.
That is why Jobber Grow ranks first here. It can support visit evidence without presenting a continuous phone trail to the manager. The policy still must disclose that the phone grants background location access. “The owner cannot see a live dot” does not mean “the phone never processes location.”
Adjacent properties are a known edge case. Jobber says users near multiple visits are prompted to choose manually. Test a townhouse row, campus, or two neighboring lawns before allowing automatic time to flow into payroll or job costing.
When is ClockShark’s breadcrumb trail justified?
Choose ClockShark when periodic route history is genuinely needed and the company does not need location embedded in a landscaping CRM.
ClockShark’s current GPS page says the app:
- records a point at clock-in and clock-out;
- samples location every 10 to 15 minutes during the workday;
- updates a “Who’s Working Now” map for clocked-in workers;
- continues recording GPS without cellular coverage and syncs later;
- shows an accuracy circle reported by the phone; and
- does not track after the worker clocks out.
Those are clearer published boundaries than most marketing pages provide. They still need a field test. A 10-to-15-minute interval can miss a short stop. An offline point can arrive later. A large accuracy circle means the device may have been anywhere inside it.
ClockShark Standard costs $40 per month plus $9 per active user per month in US dollars. Pro costs $60 plus $11 per user. Both list GPS tracking, and the pricing page states that a three-year contract applies. What remains unverified in Service Autopilot and LMN by Granum?
Service Autopilot’s Team App page says every clock-in and clock-out is GPS-stamped. Its pricing page places employee tracking, route optimization, and job costing on Pro at $199 per month on annual subscription rates. Pro includes two mobile licenses, while Pro Plus lists five at $499 per month.
The public pages do not answer enough privacy and data-control questions to rank it higher. They do not clearly state whether location is collected only at punches or between them, what happens on a break or after clock-out, how long history remains, which roles can view it, or whether raw records can be exported and deleted. Ask the vendor to demonstrate each point in the trial and put the answer in the order form or implementation record.
LMN by Granum’s pricing page lists GPS location verification, weather notes recorded from location, and live job and crew maps. Professional starts at $648 per month, billed monthly, after a one-time onboarding fee. It includes three office or crew-lead licenses and 15 crew licenses.
LMN may make sense when a larger landscape company also needs budgeting, estimating, job costing, and operational reporting. It is not a sensible GPS purchase for a tiny crew unless the rest of that system is already justified. Its live pricing page also leaves the collection cadence, off-clock boundary, retention, role access, and export format to be verified.
Unknown is not the same as absent. It means the buyer needs evidence before turning the feature on.
What should a crew GPS policy say?
Complete this template before inviting users or installing vehicle hardware. Replace every bracketed field. Do not leave “as needed” where a manager needs a real boundary.
Purpose. [Company] collects location data only for [dispatch / visit verification / timekeeping / route review / vehicle safety / theft recovery]. It will not be used for an unrelated purpose without a documented review and updated notice.

NIST’s Privacy Framework does not supply a ready-made employment policy or replace legal advice. It does give the right buying sequence: identify data processing, privacy risks, values, and legal requirements; set desired outcomes; evaluate vendors against them; and address any residual gap. How do you test GPS without testing it on an unsuspecting crew?
Use a disclosed pilot with consenting participants and non-customer test records. Pick one company-owned phone and, if relevant, one approved personal phone. Record the app and operating-system versions, permission settings, user role, network state, battery level, and expected result before each case.

Do not invent a universal accuracy threshold. Phone sensors, tree cover, buildings, device settings, and vendor processing all affect the result. Define the operational decision first. A broad point may be enough to distinguish the shop from a property but not enough to decide which unit in a complex received service.
Repeat the no-connectivity case with the field software offline test. Location history and time entries must reconcile to the same event after reconnection. A map point without the matching job record is not a complete proof-of-service workflow.
Which GPS data should a manager actually review?
Use exception review, not map watching.
- Start with a named exception: missed window, disputed visit, unexplained route gap, time-entry mismatch, safety event, or missing asset.
- Open only the period and fields needed for that exception.
- Check schedule changes, traffic, weather, supply runs, device accuracy, connectivity, and crew notes.
- Ask the worker for context before reaching a conclusion.
- Record the resolved reason, correction, and any process change.
- Delete or age out detailed history under the written retention rule.
Managers should not score workers from raw point counts. A crew can generate fewer points because of a dead phone, denied permission, an offline area, or a workflow that requires fewer tracked actions. A dense trail can mean a different tracking mode, not better performance.
